Speedometer Disassembly Procedure

By Sandy Mandel

Warning: Rolling back the odometer to misrepresent the true mileage of a vehicle is a illegal. This procedure is just to match the in going speedometer with that of a outgoing unit.

Also, this procedure assumes you are capable with hand tools and can make observations concerning the correct usage of tools. If you feel this is not up to your capabilities, United Speedometer at:

They will repair and reset your speedo for $125-150 on average. This is much less expensive than breaking something irreplaceable.

Objective: To remove and disassemble a GM F-body 3thrd gen F-body in order to make internal repairs, parts exchanges and resetting of the odometer for the sole purpose of matching up to the OE speedo mileage for certification and original mileage preservation. Anything other than that can be considered a federal offense.

Tools:
Needle nose pliers (small to very small and on with a 'bull nose')
hex head drivers/sockets ranging from 4mm to 7 mm
Small spade screwdriver

Removal from instrument cluster: (assuming cluster is benched)

Remove all 10 7mm hex head screws from the bezel and lens. Remove metal bezel underneath lens and set aside in a safe place.

The speedometer is held on to the instrument cluster from the back by two small hex head screws with rubber grommets. Another small screw holds the VSS electronic sensor to the back of the speedometer. Remove all 3 screws. Speedometer will now separate from the cluster.

With the speedometer unit separated from the cluster, set cluster aside. To remove speedometer pointer, keep magnet wheel inside speedo on pointer shaft from rotating while gently grasping the pointer and rotating it to the left. The pointer will loosen and can be removed and set aside in a safe area.

Remove the (2) back pan head black screws from the face place, being careful not to scrape screwdriver across face plate. Remove face plate and set aside in a safe area.

The odometer is held in with a copper clasp which is pulled upward to release the odo shaft. Move the odo shaft to the left so the right shaft end is free from the green base of the speedo assembly.

To reset the odo, there is a plastic guide sheet that holds the odo stop tabs all in a line. Carefully pry this tab sheet off to free up the tabs so they can move around freely. Spin the odo numbers around until the desired reading is established with all the metal tabs aligned on the opposite side. Replace the plastic sheet to hold the tabs in place.

To separate the upper and lower halves of the speedometer, there are two extremely tiny 2-4mm hex head screws which you will need the needle nose pliers (bull nose) to grasp and turn the screws to the left. Continue until the screws are finger loose. Be careful not to round the heads too much.

To remove the pointer movement, the clock pointer return spring must be removed from the pointer shaft. Gently pry the end of the spring anchored in the base of the speedo between 3 small pillars. Upon replacement, adhesive will be needed to secure the spring end in place. Gently grasp the spring anchor donut on the pointer shaft with needle nose pliers and hold the back magnet wheel to prevent it from turning. Gently twist this donut off the shaft, set aside in a save area. Now remove a very small copper clasp which holds the pointer shaft in place and set it aside. The shaft should now drop through the base.

To reassemble, reverse the above.
